Tex Robin's Background
|
Tex's great-grandfather
immigrated to Texas from Sweden in 1870 but the family bootmaking business actually started with Tex's father. Tex started making boots when he was 10 years old in his
father's shop in Throckmorton, Texas. Tex's father, W.L. Robin (also known as Tex), was a cowboy who rode in
the wild west shows in the late 1930's. While competing on the rodeo circuit, W.L. began to remodel and repair
boots for the other bronc riders. After he had taken a
lot of boots apart and put them back together, W.L.
decided to make his own. After working in Breckenridge,
Throckmorton, and Fort Worth, Texas, he moved to the city
of Coleman in 1954, and opened a shop with his son Tex.
Tex, at his father's side, learned to make a complete boot
while growing up in the 1950's. In 1970, W.L. Robin left for Austin where he worked at
Buck Steiner's Capital Saddlery until his death in 1972. Today, Tex has about all he can do and has moved to Abilene. He mostly works alone but still teaches a new student from time to time. He has an impressive portfolio of boots that he has made and knows feet and how a boot should fit. Tex says "To make a boot you must have both artistic talent and mechanical ability". |
